Episode 7: Close the Book

By: Susan Glaspell

Susan Glaspell was a pioneering American playwright, novelist, journalist, and actress who made significant contributions to the American literary and theatrical landscape in the early 20th century. Born on July 1, 1876, in Davenport, Iowa, Glaspell's work often explored themes of gender roles, oppression, and the complexities of human relationships.

In 1916, Glaspell co-founded the Provincetown Players, a groundbreaking theater group based in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The Provincetown Players played a pivotal role in the development of American drama, championing the works of emerging playwrights, including Eugene O’Neill.

Close The Book had its premiere as part of the first bill of the Provincetown Player’s 1917-1918 season.
