Episode 5: He and She

During the early 20th century Rachel Crothers was by far the most successful female playwright, and one of the most successful playwrights, period. As the New York Times wrote in 1980, Crothers was:

“ …at the apex of her career…” and “…was the symbol of success in the commercial theater.”

Starting in 1906 Crothers wrote almost a play a year until 1937, with most of them being produced on Broadway, a total of 30 plays in all. Moreover, she directed almost all these plays herself. Few if any playwrights of any gender had the Broadway success of Rachel Crothers.

A major reason for Crothers' importance lies in her groundbreaking portrayal of complex female characters. At a time when women's roles on stage were often limited to stereotypes or supporting roles, Crothers boldly crafted protagonists who were nuanced, independent, and grappling with issues of identity, society, and personal freedom.

Beyond her artistic achievements, Rachel Crothers was a trailblazer in advocating for the recognition of women's contributions to theater. Through her leadership and success, she demonstrated that women could excel not only as playwrights but also as directors, producers, and influential figures within the theater industry—an important message during an era when women's voices were often marginalized.

He and She was written in 1913, though didn’t get a full production until February 12, 1920 at what is now The Hayes Theatre, though at the time it was named the Little Theatre, as it was, and still is, the smallest theatre on Broadway. The play is now considered Crother’s most complicated study of the various ramifications of feminism.
