Episode 1: Overtones

Overtones by Alice Gerstenberg, written in 1913 and first produced in 1915 by the Washington Square Players in New York. Overtones has been referred to as the first expressionist play written by an American playwright, predating the experimental plays of Eugene O’Neill, who acknowledged the influence of Gerstenberg on his work.

Gerstenberg's works explored themes of identity, social convention, and the subconscious mind, and her plays were celebrated for their sharp characterizations and insightful commentary on human nature.

Gerstenberg is also known for her contributions to the little theatre movement, a rebellion against Broadway and the commercial theatre of the time. These theatres promoted artistic excellence and experimentation and by producing new works American playwrights, the little theatre movement helped shape the mature American drama of the 20th century.
